Body Cleansing With Lemons

If you are thinking about detoxifying or cleansing with lemons, you might be wondering why lemons are often recommended for this.

Lemons from the Citrus limon tree, have a low PH of about 2 to 3 and contain about 5-6% citric acid. There is also another component of lemons, and that is d-limonene. d-limonene is used for a variety of applications, from cleaning stains, and protecting woods, to taking oil off of machinery, and even as a non-toxic insecticide treatment. This is the part of the lemon that gives it a cleansing effect.

Think about it this way. We have been using lemons to clean our homes safely and efficiently for years. Cleansing or detoxifying the body with lemons makes sense because they are non-toxic. They also have antibacterial properties because of the low PH. Bacteria can’t grow or multiply with a low PH.

Are there any other reasons that cleansing with lemons make sense? Yes, aromatherapy. Studies have shown that the scent of lemons may enhance the mood. So the old saying “If life gives you lemons….make lemonade” might actually make you smile in more ways than one.

What about the nutrients of the lemon? Can it be part of a cleanse and still provide basic nutrients? Here is the nutritional breakdown of lemons according to the USDA.
